INTRODUCTION:

THIS WEBSITE IS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE TO BOTH NEW AND RETURNING STUDENTS AND THEIR PARENTS, COMPREHENSIVE AND UP-TO-DATE INFORMATION ABOUT OUR INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PROGRAM, AS WELL A WEALTH OF EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES.

Our Program

Fourth and fifth grade students may elect to study a band or orchestra instrument and become performing members of the school band or orchestra. Students receive a weekly 30 minute lesson, and participate in ensemble and section rehearsals. Students are given homework practice assignments at each lesson. They receive weekly grades based on their level of mastery  of these assignments, and number of minutes practiced during the course of the week. Weekly grades are averaged at the end of the marking period in order to determine the marking period grade. In addition to our annual Holiday and Spring Concerts in our school, students perform at Toms River Schools' Early Leaning Center in December. There are other performing opportunities afforded interested students within the context of the school day. For very detailed vital  information about everything that the student and their parents need to know about our program, click on the link: "Beginner's Page and Links", which is found at the very top of this home page.

Students may participate in the summer instrumental music program and receive a weekly 30 minute group lesson with others in their age group. This program runs for five weeks in the month of July.

The instrumental music program continues in intermediate and through high school levels, and we encourage students to continue when they 'graduate' from our school. Performing opportunities increase with each level.

    MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

Dear Parents/Guardians and Students,

It is my sincere desire and aim that every instrumental music student have a successful, enriching, and enjoyable learning experience in our music program here at the Hooper Avenue Elementary School. If you are renting or have purchased an instrument for your child, you are making an investment in your child's education and character. I want you and your child to get the most out of your investment. You can help to insure this by assisting your child in maintaining a consistent practice routine at home until they have achieved   the self-discipline necessary to continue on their own. I recommend that students practice at home, the lesson assignment that I give them each week for 15 minutes or more each day. A schedule such as this will not only guarantee success, but will help develop the inner self-discipline that is necessary for success in any pursuit in life. You will be pleased to know that in addition to receiving a musical education, educational research has shown that the study of music actually effect improvement in reading, spelling, mathematics, listening skills, verbal activities, motor skills, and character development. Students will reap these benefits to the degree that they apply themselves. For more on this topic click HERE.
